Plastic Canvas craft is a great way to make your Cross Stitch projects into 3D and the many different things you can make with Plastic Canvas is amazing!
The slight difference being that you normally only use half Cross Stitch on Plastic Canvas projects, combined with long stitch, which is half Cross Stitch but over more holes, all stitches used will be shown clearly on the pattern of choice AND that of course means less time stitching! Also the thread you can use with Plastic Canvas patterns is generally knitting yarn as opposed to stranded cotton, so it’s a great way to use up odds of knitting yarn you have left over.
The Plastic Canvas itself is exactly as its name suggests with holes in just the same way as Aida fabric but plastic, one great advantage being that Plastic Canvas doesn’t fray! Nor does it need the use of hoops or frames and no need to worry so much about the tension of your stitches.
Here is an example of what Plastic Canvas looks like. This is on a purple background so you can actually see it properly as this example is see through, although you can find Plastic Canvas in tons of different colors and shapes here.
The ‘count’ of Plastic Canvas sold is 7, 10 or 14 count sold in A4 pieces, but also circles, triangles and even novelty shapes such as dinosaurs, birds etc can be found ready cut.
As designs on your Plastic Canvas are stitched right to the edge you will note that you will need to overcast your projects on the edges that are not to be joined to another piece. Overcast the edges, or join the edges of pieces with the same color yarn, unless of course you want to make it so that the edging is actually a different color, which can be quite eye-catching in its self too.
With Plastic Canvas craft you can make fridge magnets, tissue boxes, hanging mobiles, Christmas decorations, coasters, photo frames, wall hangings, handbags and purses, door stops, kitchen accessories, bookmarks, doll house furniture and even the doll’s house for the furniture to go in, car accessories, (yes really), dolls with clothing and many other toys and so much more. We have even seen Plastic Canvas kits for an entire village in Plastic Canvas! The only limits are your imagination. When we started researching for this page we were amazed at the number of patterns for Plastic Canvas there was out there and the scope of Plastic Canvas kits available.
Teaching children Plastic Canvas crafts is a great way of teaching them needlework and hand-eye coordination at the same time as letting them make something themselves that they can be proud of and keep.
There are many Plastic Canvas kits available with everything you need to make the project, also a ton of Plastic Canvas books and magazines with patterns and instructions, and of course there are also tons of free patterns for Plastic Canvas you can find on the internet as well as designing your own and letting your imagination run wild a bit!
